That nagging headache just won’t give you a minute of peace. Your jaw feels tight and tired. And there’s a strange clicking sound whenever you yawn? What’s going on? You might think it’s just stress, and it could be. But this set of symptoms together can also be signs of a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Fortunately, a TMJ treatment dentist like Dr. Andy Stein at Stein Family Dentistry can help with zero surgery. No invasive procedures or devices. Just much-needed relief.Â
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is your jaw’s hinge; it connects your jawbone to your skull. When under frequent stress, your TMJ can cause chronic jaw pain and tension headaches, along with painful chewing.
You might also hear a clicking or popping sound when you open and close your mouth for any reason, including yawning. If this happens, it means the joint’s shock-absorbing disc is probably out of place. Less common signs include ringing in the ears or facial pain.
Diagnosing TMJ is sometimes tricky, since symptoms can overlap with other conditions. Dr. Stein does a thorough exam, also reviewing your medical history and checking for tenderness. He’ll also evaluate the range of motion in your jaw. In most cases, he’ll use digital X-rays or 3D scans to confirm his diagnosis.
TMJ pain can have multiple triggers. Common causes of TMJ disorder include:
Most TMJ pain responds well to conservative treatments. Dr. Stein specializes in custom-fitted oral appliances. They’re made using precise impressions of your teeth to hold your jaw in a relaxed position. Combining this with lifestyle changes and simple jaw exercises is ideal.Â
During a flare-up, stick with soft food to give your jaw a rest. And importantly, avoid tough and/or chewy food. You can use an ice pack for 10 minutes to reduce inflammation. And adding some relaxing activities, such as gentle stretching or yoga, helps with stress.
Surgery for TMJ is rare and a last resort. It’s usually only recommended when all conservative treatments have failed. In most cases, it’s reserved for severe arthritis or structural damage. Dr. Stein exhausts all non-invasive methods first.
Dr. Stein has years of experience treating TMJ with conservative methods. At Stein Family Dentistry, the team’s focus is on finding the root cause of your pain and creating a personalized treatment plan for you.Â
